Amritsar

Amritsar is the administrative headquarters of the Amritsar District in the state of Punjab, India. Located in the northwestern part of India in the State of Punjab, 32 miles (51 km) east of Lahore, Pakistan, the city has derived its name from Amrit-saagar meaning "The Ocean of the Nectar of Immortality".

It is home to the Harimandir Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple, and is the spiritual and cultural centre of the Sikh religion. It is also home to Durgiana temple and many other historic sites including Jallianwala Bagh, Central Khalsa Orphanage, which was once a home to Shaheed Udham Singh, a prominent figure of Indian freedom movement.

The city is known for its Punjabi food, and many other tourist attractions as also for its handicrafts, fabric, carpets, and light engineering goods.
